How to disable autoplay in Windows XP?

Autoplay can be quite disruptive when turned on, especially when it fires up not only when a CD is inserted, but everytime a thumb-drive or external harddrive is recognized.  It may also fire up simply when you resume from stand-by.  Here's a quick and easy method to disable autoplay in Windows XP:

  • Browse to Start -> Run
  • Enter "gpedit.msc"
  • Your Group Policy manager will open
  • In the left panel browse to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System
  • Double click on the "Turn autoplay off" option (towards the bottom) and set it to "enabled" to disable autoplay
