Hit your keyboard power or sleep button in the middle of a presentation?

I just had this happen to me the other day.  Not in the middle of a presentation, but with a hundred windows open and some unrecoverable data lost because the power button on the keyboard inadvertently banged against the desk as I was moving it out of the way.  The computer promptly shut itself down.  Without further ado, here's how to disable those pesky buttons:

Disabling power, sleep, and wake buttons in Windows XP

  • Navigate to Start -> Control Panel
  • Click Power Options -> Advanced tab
  • Under "Power buttons," change the settings for the power and sleep buttons to "Do nothing"
