What is a Markup Language?

Markup language is a broad term used to define the coding of web pages.  HTML is the most commonly used markup language, and stands for HyperText Markup Language.  Other markup languages include CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), used to influence the positioning, layout, colors, and overall style of pages from a centralized source (a stylesheet), as well as XML and XSL, used to format, process, and display sets of data in a uniform fashion.  Categories for markup language include:
