What's an Operating System?

Operating systems (O/S) are the driving force behind a computer system.  They are the foundation that lets other applications, such as your web browser, run.  The most common operating system in use today is Microsoft's proprietary Windows O/S, followed by Linux.  Our categories for operating systems are:
