Electronic faxing (e-faxing) has come a long way since it began several years ago.  The services tend to be more efficient now, less costly, a wider variety of file formats are supported and more area codes are available.  We've reviewed a bunch of efax services for you and currently recommend Packetel's efax service.  They have the least expensive rate we could find aside from k7.net, which up until recently was very reliable (we've had issues receiving faxes from them as of late).  Also, with k7.net you are restricted to a Seattle area code.  Check out our Packetel promo code below if you choose to sign up.

Outgoing faxing - sending faxes over the Internet

If you're looking for a fax service that lets you send faxes via email or over the Internet, we highly recommend Faxaway.  They have by far the lowest rates we've encountered ($1/ month to use their service and very inexpensive national and international rates).  If anyone finds a better deal, please comment!

Packetel lets you choose incoming fax format

One thing worth noting is that once you've signed up with Packetel you can adjust the incoming fax format in your account settings.  You may select to receive faxes in either TIF or PDF format.  We prefer TIF, as it tends to provide slightly higher image quality, but PDF is a good option since it will run on all machines.
