Notice how not all Drupal websites make use of the front page option. For these, and for those that prefer not having all newly created content "defaulted" to be promoted to the front page, here is how you change this option (and modify default configuration for content types in general):
Simply browse to admin -> settings -> content-types, select the content type you would like to configure (ie. "page"), and check or uncheck "promoted to front page." Note that you can also make adjustments to other default settings, such as whether or not to allow comments by default. Also, if you have modules installed that support default configurations for content types, such as calendar (view in calendar by default), you can change those settings here as well.
